About Ford P100
The Ford P100 is a two-door, rear-wheel-drive pickup derived from Ford passenger cars rather than a standalone truck range. It originated in South Africa in 1971 as the Cortina Pickup, commonly described as a “bakkie”, and adopted the P100 name in 1982 as exports to Europe expanded. In South Africa it was also marketed as the Ford 1-Tonner.
The first main generation shared its styling and mechanical roots with the Cortina and Taunus. It combined a car-like cab with a separate load area, strengthened chassis and work-oriented rear suspension. Variations included different wheelbases, wellside or flat-deck bodies, cab-chassis versions and several four- and six-cylinder petrol engines, depending on market and year.
For 1988, Ford introduced a second main version with a Sierra-based cab. Built in Portugal for European markets, it retained rear-wheel drive and a ladder-frame chassis beneath its more modern bodywork. The principal engines were a 2.0-litre petrol unit and a later 1.8-litre turbo-diesel. Production ended in 1993 as the Sierra era closed.
Within Ford’s commercial range, the P100 sat between smaller car-derived utilities and larger pickups or Transit models. It is best known for combining familiar Ford car components and cabin design with practical one-tonne carrying ability.
