About Ford Orion

The Ford Orion was a compact family saloon produced by Ford Europe from 1983 to 1993. It was closely related to the Ford Escort but used a four-door, three-box body with a separate luggage compartment instead of the Escort’s hatchback layout. The model offered traditional saloon styling at a time when hatchbacks were becoming increasingly common in Europe.

Positioned alongside the Escort in Ford’s small-family-car range and below the larger Sierra, the Orion shared much of the Escort’s front-wheel-drive engineering. It appealed to buyers seeking familiar Ford mechanical components, useful boot space and a more formal appearance without moving to a larger vehicle.

Three versions are commonly identified. The original model arrived in 1983, followed by a substantially updated design in 1986 that is widely called the Mark II, although Ford treated it as a facelift. A new Escort-based generation appeared in 1990 and remained in production until the Orion name was discontinued in 1993. The body style then continued under the Escort saloon badge.

Depending on year and market, the range included petrol and diesel engines, manual and automatic transmissions, and trims from practical L and GL models to better-equipped Ghia variants. Injection models, the 1600E and the later Ghia Si added a more performance-oriented character. The Orion is chiefly known as Ford’s distinct saloon alternative to the Escort hatchback.
