About Ford Mondeo

Introduced in 1993, the Ford Mondeo was developed as a global mid-size car and replaced the Sierra in Ford’s European range. It became one of the brand’s main large family cars, positioned above the Focus and serving both private and fleet buyers. Around five million were sold in Europe during its original production run.

The Mondeo is commonly grouped into five generations, although regional “Mk” designations vary. Depending on generation and market, it was offered as a four-door saloon, five-door hatchback and estate. Petrol and diesel engines were widely available, while later European models added a full-hybrid powertrain. Sportier trims, including ST and ST-Line versions, combined distinctive styling with firmer chassis settings.

The model is particularly known for balanced handling, long-distance comfort, a spacious cabin and practical body choices. These qualities helped it compete in the mainstream D-segment against other large family and business cars, while higher specifications offered features associated with more expensive models.

European production ended in Valencia, Spain, in March 2022 as Ford shifted its regional passenger-car strategy towards crossovers and electrification. A new China-focused Mondeo generation was introduced in 2022 and remains part of Ford’s Chinese range, where it is sold as a large, technology-oriented saloon with petrol and hybrid variations.
