About Ford Laser

The Ford Laser was a compact passenger car developed through Ford’s partnership with Mazda. Introduced in Asia-Pacific markets at the start of the 1980s, it was closely related to successive Mazda Familia/323 models, with Ford-specific styling, trim and positioning. In Australia, it replaced the Escort as Ford’s mainstream small car and was offered across five generations from 1981 to 2002, when the Focus assumed its role.

Most Lasers were front-wheel-drive hatchbacks or four-door sedans powered by four-cylinder engines. Body styles and names varied by market. Some countries also received wagons, convertibles or light commercial versions, while early Australian sedans and wagons used the Ford Meteor name. Model codes including KA, KB, KC, KE, KF, KH, KN and KQ identify major series and updates.

The range extended from basic economy models to better-equipped Ghia versions and sportier derivatives. The TX3 is the best-known performance variation, with some versions featuring turbocharging and four-wheel drive. The Laser became known for practical dimensions, useful cabin space and economical operation. It was particularly important in Australia and parts of Asia, giving Ford a strong presence in the compact-car class.
