About Ford L-Series

The Ford L-Series was a range of conventional-cab commercial trucks produced from 1970 to 1998. Commonly known as the Louisville Line after Ford’s Kentucky truck plant, it replaced the N-Series and Ford’s earlier heavy-duty F-Series models. The range occupied the medium- and heavy-duty levels of Ford’s North American truck line-up, covering Classes 6, 7 and 8.

L-Series trucks were offered as straight trucks, tractors and vocational chassis. Applications included regional and long-distance haulage, construction, refuse collection, firefighting and municipal work. Model designations identified different weight ratings, bonnet lengths and axle layouts. Major variations included the shorter-bonnet LN, tandem-axle LT and LNT, set-back-axle LTS, and long-bonnet LL and LTL models. The LTL-9000 was positioned as a premium long-haul tractor, while the Aeromax introduced in 1988 provided a more aerodynamic alternative.

Two main generations were produced. The original design remained in service, with updates, from 1970 to 1995. A wider-cab second generation arrived for 1996, when Louisville became the official model name. Ford ended production in 1998 after selling its heavy-truck operations to Freightliner; related designs continued under the Sterling brand.

The L-Series is known for its broad configuration range, robust conventional layout and long service in demanding fleet and vocational roles.
