About Ford Ikon
The Ford Ikon is a small four-door sedan developed from Ford’s Fiesta architecture. Introduced in India in 1999, it was designed for markets where buyers wanted the manageable size and running costs of a compact car with the separate boot and cabin space of a saloon. The original model was built in Chennai and was also assembled or sold in markets including South Africa, Mexico and China.
Two main generations carried the Ikon name. The first was based on the fourth-generation Fiesta and remained in Indian production until 2011. Later versions sold in South Africa and Mexico were derived from newer Fiesta-based models. Mexico also received an Ikon Hatch, related to the Indian-built Ford Figo, making body style and mechanical specification dependent on market and model year.
Engine choices included small four-cylinder petrol and diesel units, generally paired with manual transmissions, although availability varied by country. India also offered a CNG version in selected cities. The 1.6-litre petrol model became particularly associated with responsive performance and engaging handling.
Within Ford’s range, the Ikon served as an accessible entry-level sedan and later as a lower-cost alternative to newer Fiesta models. It is chiefly known for straightforward engineering, practical dimensions, a useful boot and road manners that were relatively lively for its class.
