About Ford GT
The Ford GT is a low-volume, mid-engined two-seat supercar created as Ford’s flagship performance model. Its design and purpose draw directly from the Ford GT40 racing cars that won the 24 Hours of Le Mans in the 1960s. Rather than serving as a regular sports car, the GT has acted as a halo vehicle and technology showcase above the Mustang and other Ford Performance models.
The modern Ford GT has had two main road-car generations. The first was produced for the 2005 and 2006 model years, combining GT40-inspired styling with an aluminium structure, a supercharged 5.4-litre V8 and a six-speed manual transmission. The second entered production in late 2016 as a 2017 model and continued through 2022. It adopted a carbon-fibre monocoque, a twin-turbocharged 3.5-litre EcoBoost V6, a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, active aerodynamics and adjustable suspension.
The later GT was developed alongside a racing programme that achieved a Le Mans class victory in 2016. Variations included multiple Heritage Editions, the final LM Edition and the track-only Mk II. The 2023 Mk IV was an even more specialised track-only derivative. Known for rarity, advanced construction and a close connection to endurance racing, the GT occupies a distinct position among American supercars.
