About Ford Granada

The Ford Granada name was used for two distinct model families in Europe and North America. The European Granada arrived in 1972 as Ford’s large executive car, replacing separate British and German flagship ranges and helping to unify Ford of Europe’s line-up. It sat above models such as the Cortina and Taunus, offering more space, comfort and equipment.

European production covered two closely related generations from 1972 to 1985. Depending on the market and year, the range included two- and four-door saloons, an estate and a coupé, with four-cylinder and V6 engines. Early entry-level versions were initially sold as the Ford Consul, while Ghia models occupied the more luxurious end of the range. The Granada became known as a spacious, conventional rear-wheel-drive car suited to private, fleet, taxi and official use. From 1985 to 1994, the Granada name continued in the UK and Ireland on the newer Ford Scorpio, which carried the Scorpio name elsewhere in Europe.

The unrelated North American Granada was produced from 1975 to 1982. Positioned as a compact or mid-size family car with upmarket styling, it was offered across two generations in coupé, saloon and, later, estate forms. Both regional versions are remembered for combining mainstream Ford engineering with more formal design and higher equipment levels than the brand’s smaller models.
