About Ford Festiva
The Ford Festiva is a front-wheel-drive subcompact developed as an affordable entry-level model. Introduced in Japan in 1986, it was designed by Mazda, while many export versions were manufactured by Kia in South Korea. The nameplate remained in use until 2002, although availability and model identity varied considerably by market.
The first generation was a small, lightweight hatchback closely related to the original Mazda 121 and Kia Pride. It reached North America for the 1988 model year and was also sold in markets including Australia and New Zealand. Three- and five-door bodies were the most common, with simple four-cylinder engines and manual or automatic transmissions.
A rounder second generation arrived in the 1990s. It retained the Festiva name in some markets but was sold as the Ford Aspire in North America and as the Kia Avella elsewhere. Depending on the country, hatchback and saloon variations were available. The third generation was limited mainly to Japan, where the Mazda Demio-based Festiva Mini Wagon offered a taller five-door body.
Within Ford’s range, the Festiva sat below larger compact cars as a basic urban and first-car choice. It is best known for compact dimensions, straightforward mechanical design, useful hatchback packaging and economical operation rather than performance or luxury.
