About Ford Falcon
The Ford Falcon began as a compact family car introduced in North America for the 1960 model year. Offered in several body styles, it provided practical, relatively simple transport below Ford’s larger passenger cars. North American production ended in 1970, but the Falcon name continued for much longer in Argentina and Australia.
The Australian Falcon became the best-known and longest-lived version. Produced from 1960 to 2016 across seven generations, it developed from an American-based design into a locally engineered, rear-wheel-drive large car. It was a central part of Ford Australia’s range and a major rival to other locally built family and fleet vehicles. Body styles included sedans, station wagons, hardtop coupés, panel vans and utilities, although later ranges concentrated on sedans and utilities.
Falcon versions ranged from basic fleet and family models to luxury Fairmont and G6 derivatives. Sporting variants included the Falcon GT, XR6, turbocharged XR6 Turbo and V8-powered XR8. The model is particularly associated with spacious cabins, strong six-cylinder engines, towing ability, long-distance comfort and Australian motorsport. Argentine production, based on the early Falcon design, ran from 1962 to 1991 and included sedan, wagon and Ranchero utility versions.
