About Ford Fairmont
The Ford Fairmont name was used for two distinct rear-wheel-drive passenger-car lines. In North America, it identified a compact model sold for the 1978–1983 model years as the successor to the Maverick. This single-generation Fairmont introduced Ford’s Fox platform, later shared with the Mustang, and was positioned as a practical family car with low weight, useful interior space and straightforward mechanical design. Body styles included two- and four-door sedans, a five-door station wagon and the Futura coupe, while Squire trim added wood-look wagon detailing. Four-cylinder, inline-six and V8 engines were offered at different points.
In Australia, Fairmont had a longer and more upmarket role. Introduced in 1965, it was the better-equipped derivative of the locally developed Falcon and evolved through successive Falcon series until 2008 rather than following separate standalone generations. Sedans formed the core range, joined by station wagons and, during the 1970s, two-door hardtops. Fairmont Ghia became the best-known premium variation, providing additional comfort, trim and equipment. Australian Fairmonts are noted for combining Falcon practicality and a rear-wheel-drive layout with a more refined specification. The name was replaced by the G6 and G6E range.
