About Ford Fairlane

The Ford Fairlane was introduced for the 1955 model year and named after Fair Lane, Henry Ford’s estate in Dearborn, Michigan. In North America, it began as Ford’s upper-level full-size passenger car, replacing the Crestline, before moving to a new mid-size platform for 1962. It remained in the range through 1970, spanning seven generations.

The Fairlane was offered as a sedan, hardtop, coupe, convertible and station wagon. Early variations included the Victoria, Crown Victoria and Sunliner, while the Fairlane 500 became a prominent higher-trim version. The retractable-hardtop Skyliner was among the most distinctive derivatives of the 1950s.

During the 1960s, the Fairlane occupied the space between Ford’s compact and full-size cars, combining family-car practicality with a broad choice of six-cylinder and V8 engines. Performance versions such as the GT, GTA and limited-production Thunderbolt helped establish its muscle-car reputation. The Torino arrived as an upscale variation for 1968 and later replaced the Fairlane in North America.

The name also had a long separate career in Australia, where the Fairlane evolved into a larger luxury model and remained in production until 2007. Overall, it is known for its wide range of body styles, changing market role and links to Ford’s 1950s design and 1960s performance era.
