About Ford F-100
The Ford F-100 is a full-size light-duty pickup that served as the half-ton entry in Ford’s F-Series. Introduced for the 1953 model year as the successor to the F-1, it remained in the US range through 1983. The F-150 joined the lineup in 1975 as a heavier half-ton model and gradually assumed the F-100’s role, becoming its replacement for 1984.
The F-100 name covered six F-Series generations, spanning the rounded trucks of the 1950s, the more angular designs of the 1960s and 1970s, and the squared-off final generation introduced for 1980. Most versions used separate body-and-frame construction, although an integrated cab-and-bed Styleside design was offered during the early 1960s.
Specifications varied considerably by year. Buyers could choose between Styleside and Flareside beds, different wheelbases and trim levels, and rear- or four-wheel drive on selected models. Power came from a broad range of inline-six and V8 petrol engines, paired with manual or automatic transmissions. Later trucks were available in better-equipped Ranger and Ranger XLT forms, alongside work-focused versions.
Known for practical design, straightforward mechanical construction and distinctive period styling, the F-100 occupies an important place between Ford’s early post-war pickups and the later F-150. Today, it is widely recognised as a classic American utility vehicle.
