About Ford Explorer
The Ford Explorer is a mid-size SUV introduced for the 1991 model year as the successor to the Bronco II. It became one of Ford’s most recognisable utility vehicles and helped establish family-oriented SUVs as mainstream alternatives to saloons, estates and minivans.
The core North American model has progressed through six generations. Early Explorers used body-on-frame construction and were offered in three-door and five-door forms, combining truck-based capability with a more practical passenger cabin. From 2011, the Explorer adopted unibody construction, while the sixth generation, launched for 2020, moved to a rear-wheel-drive-based platform.
Modern versions are three-row SUVs with seating for six or seven, depending on configuration. Rear-wheel drive and four-wheel drive are available, alongside turbocharged four-cylinder and V6 petrol engines. The range has included mainstream, luxury-oriented and performance variants, with names such as XLT, Limited, Platinum and ST. The current line also includes the off-road-focused Tremor.
Explorer sits above the Escape and Bronco Sport in Ford’s SUV range and below the larger Expedition. It is known mainly for its spacious cabin, flexible seating, towing ability and balance of everyday comfort and utility. In Europe, the Explorer name is also used for a smaller battery-electric crossover produced in Cologne, Germany, distinct from the North American three-row SUV.
