About Ford EXP
The Ford EXP was a two-seat, front-wheel-drive compact coupe sold in North America for the 1982–1988 model years. Developed from the North American Ford Escort, it shared much of that car’s engineering but used a lower three-door body with a large cargo area instead of rear seats. It served as a sportier, more personal counterpart to the Escort rather than a direct performance rival to the Mustang.
Two main generations were produced. The 1982–1985 EXP is recognised by its distinctive nose with deep-set headlamp nacelles. A substantial redesign appeared during 1985, forming the basis of the 1986–1988 Ford Escort EXP. The later version adopted a more conventional Escort-influenced front end, flush headlamps and a rounded bubbleback rear hatch.
Power came from small four-cylinder engines, initially displacing 1.6 litres and later 1.9 litres. Manual and automatic transmissions were available depending on the year and version. The range included economy- and comfort-oriented models, the turbocharged Turbo Coupe, and later Luxury Coupe and Sport Coupe variants. Sportier versions added stronger performance, revised suspension settings and distinctive trim.
The EXP is known for combining Escort-based efficiency and mechanical simplicity with unusual two-seat coupe styling. Its short production run, practical hatchback layout and distinctive early design make it an uncommon example of Ford’s 1980s compact-car strategy.
