About Ford Equator
The Ford Equator is a China-focused mid-to-large crossover SUV introduced in 2021. Known locally as the Lingyu, it was developed for Chinese family buyers and is manufactured through Ford’s partnership with Jiangling Motors. The model forms part of Ford’s locally tailored SUV range rather than its global North American or European line-up.
The Equator places greater emphasis on passenger space, comfort and everyday road use than on heavy-duty off-road ability. Initial versions were offered with five, six or seven seats, including configurations with separate second-row chairs. This flexibility and its three-row packaging suit larger households as well as mixed family and business use.
Only one main generation has been produced, although its styling, equipment and powertrain range have evolved. The original model used a turbocharged petrol engine. A redesigned plug-in hybrid version arrived in 2024, combining a 1.5-litre petrol engine with an electric drive system and retaining a seven-seat layout.
Within Ford’s Chinese portfolio, the Equator sits above smaller urban crossovers as a roomy, family-oriented alternative to larger and more expensive SUVs. It is chiefly known for flexible seating, generous cabin space, modern connectivity and driver-assistance technology, and a design shaped around local market preferences.
