About Ford E-Series
The Ford E-Series is a long-running commercial vehicle line introduced for 1961 as the Econoline. Originally a compact forward-control van, it developed into a conventional full-size van and became widely used for cargo transport, passenger carrying and specialist conversions. The Club Wagon name was applied to passenger versions, while E-150, E-250 and E-350 designations identified different capacity classes.
Across four broad generations, the E-Series evolved from a relatively simple utility vehicle into a body-on-frame platform closely associated with Ford’s truck range. Regular and extended cargo vans, passenger wagons, cutaways and stripped chassis were offered, with petrol and diesel engines varying by period and market. Its separate frame made heavier versions particularly suitable for ambulances, shuttle buses, motorhomes, delivery bodies and other upfitted vehicles.
Production of complete cargo and passenger vans ended as the Ford Transit entered the North American market. The E-Series remained in the commercial lineup as E-350 and E-450 cutaway and stripped chassis models, complementing the Transit rather than directly replacing its integrated van formats. Current versions use rear-wheel drive, a full frame and V8 petrol power. The model is known mainly for durability, load capacity, straightforward commercial engineering and broad compatibility with specialised bodies.
