About Ford Del Rey
The Ford Del Rey was a Brazilian-developed mid-size car produced by Ford do Brasil from 1981 to 1991. Based on the Corcel II architecture, it was positioned above the Corcel as a more refined family model and became Ford’s principal locally built luxury offering after the Galaxie and Landau era. It was sold mainly in Brazil, with limited exports to other South American markets.
The range centred on two- and four-door three-box saloons. An estate derivative was marketed as the Del Rey Scala and was closely related to the Ford Belina. The model remained within one basic generation, although a substantial 1985 update brought revised styling and a reorganised trim range. Early cars used Prata and Ouro designations; later versions included L, GL, GLX and Ghia, with Ghia at the top.
Most Del Rey models used Ford’s 1.6-litre CHT four-cylinder engine, while later cars could receive a Volkswagen-sourced 1.8-litre engine during the Autolatina period. Manual transmissions were common, and an automatic was also available. The Del Rey is best known for its soft ride, quiet cabin, conservative design and comparatively rich equipment rather than sporting performance. It was replaced by the Ford Versailles in 1991.
