About Ford D-Series

The Ford D-Series was a range of medium- and heavy-duty commercial trucks introduced by Ford of Britain in 1965. It replaced the Thames Trader and remained in production until 1981, when the Ford Cargo succeeded it in European markets. The range occupied the space above Ford’s lighter vans and trucks, serving distribution, construction, municipal and long-distance transport operators.

Rather than comprising several completely redesigned generations, the D-Series developed through one main design with regular mechanical and styling updates. Its forward-control layout placed a flat-fronted, tilting cab above the engine, improving load-space efficiency and maintenance access. A broad selection of wheelbases, axle arrangements and weight ratings allowed the chassis to carry box, flatbed, tipper, tanker and other specialist bodies.

Early versions included rigid trucks and tippers, followed by heavier twin-rear-axle and articulated models. The D1000, introduced in 1967, extended the line into higher weight classes and used a Cummins V8 diesel. Other models were available with Ford four- and six-cylinder diesel engines, while petrol units were offered for selected export markets.

Known for its adaptable chassis, straightforward cab design and wide model coverage, the D-Series became an important part of Ford’s British commercial-vehicle range and a direct competitor to other widely used European medium trucks of its era.
