About Ford Cougar

The Ford Cougar is a large three-door coupé introduced in 1998 and produced until 2002. Developed for international markets, it was sold under the Ford name in Europe and Australia, while the closely related North American model carried Mercury branding. It effectively followed the Ford Probe and occupied the larger, more touring-oriented end of Ford’s coupé range.

Only one generation was produced. The Cougar used a front-wheel-drive platform related to the contemporary Mondeo and combined a long coupé profile with a practical liftback and four-seat cabin. Its sharp lines and intersecting curves reflected Ford’s “New Edge” design approach of the late 1990s. Minor styling and equipment revisions appeared during the production run rather than a separate second generation.

European versions were mainly offered with a 2.0-litre Zetec four-cylinder petrol engine or a 2.5-litre Duratec V6. Five-speed manual and four-speed automatic transmissions were available, depending on engine and market. The V6 was the more performance-focused variation, while the 2.0-litre model provided a more economical entry point.

The Cougar is known for blending distinctive coupé styling with more cabin and luggage space than many compact sports cars. Its character favoured comfortable long-distance driving and stable handling over an uncompromising sports-car feel. Limited sales and a short production life have also made it a relatively uncommon model within Ford’s modern European range.
