About Ford Cortina
Introduced in 1962, the Ford Cortina was a medium-sized family car developed by Ford of Britain and built primarily at Dagenham. It combined useful passenger and luggage space with straightforward engineering and a broad choice of specifications. This made it a mainstay of Ford’s range for private owners, company fleets and export markets.
The Cortina evolved through five commonly recognised marks. Mk I and Mk II models established its conventional front-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout. The more sculpted Mk III arrived in 1970 as Ford’s British and German programmes converged, sharing its basis with the Taunus. Mk IV adopted squarer styling, while the 1979 Cortina 80 update became widely known as the Mk V. British production ended in 1982 when the Sierra replaced it.
Most Cortinas were two- or four-door saloons or estates, with engines, trim and equipment varying by generation and market. The range extended from basic family and fleet cars to GT, 1600E, GXL and Ghia versions. Lotus-Cortina models added a notable performance and competition connection, while some overseas ranges included V6 engines and pickup bodies.
Known for roomy packaging, easy servicing and an unusually wide model range, the Cortina became one of Ford’s defining European cars. More than four million were built, and the model was a benchmark family and fleet car in Britain for much of the 1960s and 1970s.
