About Ford Corsair
The Ford Corsair name is mainly associated with a British mid-size family car produced from 1963 to 1970. Introduced as the Consul Corsair, it occupied the space between the smaller Cortina and the larger Zephyr and Zodiac ranges. It used Cortina-based engineering but had a longer body, more distinctive American-influenced styling and a more upmarket market position.
The British Corsair remained a single generation, with important mechanical and equipment updates rather than a complete redesign. Early 1500 models used Ford’s Kent four-cylinder engine and were offered in Standard, Deluxe and sportier GT forms. From 1965, the Consul name was dropped and Essex V4 engines of approximately 1.7 and 2.0 litres were introduced. The later 2000E combined the larger engine with upgraded trim and was positioned as the premium version.
Most examples were two- or four-door saloons. Estate bodies were also available, while specialist firm Crayford produced rare convertible conversions. The Corsair became known for its unusual styling, spacious cabin and motorway-focused character. It left the range when the larger Mk III Cortina arrived in 1970.
Ford Australia reused the Corsair name from 1989 to 1992 for an unrelated front-wheel-drive model based on the Nissan Pintara. Offered as a sedan or five-door liftback in GL and Ghia versions, it served as a locally built mid-size family car.
