About Ford Contour
The Ford Contour was a front-wheel-drive four-door sedan sold in North America for the 1995–2000 model years. It replaced the Ford Tempo and was developed through the same global programme as the European Ford Mondeo. In Ford’s passenger-car range, it occupied the space between the smaller Escort and the larger Taurus.
The Contour remained in a single generation, with a substantial update for 1998 that introduced revised exterior styling and changes to the model range. Major versions included the entry-level GL, better-equipped LX and sportier SE, although availability varied by year. Engines consisted mainly of a 2.0-litre four-cylinder and a 2.5-litre V6, with manual and automatic transmissions offered according to specification.
The most distinctive version was the SVT Contour, introduced for 1998. Developed by Ford’s Special Vehicle Team, it combined a higher-output V6 with a five-speed manual gearbox, sport-tuned suspension, upgraded brakes and unique exterior details. This gave Ford an unusually performance-focused four-door sedan in this part of the market.
The Contour is known for its European-influenced chassis, responsive handling and refined V6 option. Its cabin, particularly the rear seating area, was relatively compact for a North American mid-size car. Production ended after the 2000 model year.
