About Ford Cargo
The Ford Cargo is a cab-over commercial truck range developed by Ford of Britain and launched in the early 1980s. It replaced older Ford medium- and heavy-duty trucks in several markets, combining a compact cab layout with good forward visibility and flexible chassis options. Depending on specification, it served urban distribution, regional transport, municipal work, construction and long-distance haulage.
Production extended beyond the United Kingdom. Ford Otosan began building the Cargo in Turkey in 1983 and later took a major role in developing the range, while regional versions were also manufactured in Brazil and supplied to markets including North America. Ford’s European truck operations passed to Iveco in 1986, after which related models were sold under Iveco Ford branding.
There is no single worldwide generation sequence because the Cargo evolved differently by region. The original design was followed by substantial cab, chassis and powertrain updates, including later Turkish-developed models using Ford Ecotorq diesel engines. The range covered two- and multi-axle rigid trucks, tractor units and specialised construction configurations.
Cargo became an important part of Ford’s heavy commercial vehicle business, particularly in Turkey, Latin America and selected export markets. It is chiefly known for practical cab-over packaging, a broad choice of configurations and its adaptability to demanding fleet roles.
