About Ford C-Series
The Ford C-Series was a North American range of medium- and heavy-duty cab-over-engine trucks. The name was first applied in 1953 to cab-over versions derived from Ford’s F-Series. For 1957, it became a distinct tilt-cab line with its own flat-front design. This main generation remained in production, with limited styling changes and evolving powertrains, through 1990.
Ford offered the C-Series in numerous weight ratings, commonly identified by designations such as C-500, C-600, C-700, C-800 and C-900. Diesel-powered versions often used four-digit names, including C-6000 and C-8000. Depending on specification, the trucks were built as straight trucks or tractors and could use petrol or diesel engines, manual or automatic transmissions, and a wide choice of wheelbases and axle configurations. Mercury-badged versions were also sold in Canada.
Within Ford’s commercial lineup, the C-Series provided a compact cab-over alternative to conventional medium- and heavy-duty trucks. Its short cab-to-bumper layout, broad windscreen and forward-tilting cab suited urban delivery, refuse collection, utility work and other vocational duties. It became especially familiar as a chassis for fire engines, including pumpers, tankers and aerial apparatus. The long-lived basic design is noted for practical packaging, good visibility and adaptable chassis configurations. Ford gradually replaced the range with the Cargo during the late 1980s.
