About Ford Bronco II
The Ford Bronco II is a compact, body-on-frame SUV sold for the 1984–1990 model years. Introduced as a smaller alternative to the full-size Bronco, it was based on the Ford Ranger compact pickup platform and built alongside the Ranger in Louisville, Kentucky. Its short wheelbase, two-door body and fixed steel roof placed it in the growing compact SUV segment.
Produced in a single generation, the Bronco II received a significant update for 1989, including revised front styling and a redesigned dashboard. Early models were four-wheel drive, while rear-wheel-drive versions joined the range for 1986. Most examples used 2.8- or 2.9-litre V6 petrol engines, although a 2.3-litre turbo-diesel was offered briefly. Manual and automatic transmissions were available.
Trim levels varied by year and included practical base or XL models, better-equipped XLT versions and the distinctive Eddie Bauer edition with upgraded interior and exterior detailing. The Bronco II is known for combining compact dimensions with traditional truck-based construction and genuine four-wheel-drive capability. It occupied an important position between Ford’s Ranger pickup and full-size Bronco before being replaced in the same market segment by the larger Explorer for 1991.
