About Ford Bantam
The Ford Bantam was a compact, car-derived pickup developed and produced in South Africa from 1983 to 2011. Commonly described locally as a half-ton bakkie, it combined a two-seat single cab and open load bed with front-wheel-drive passenger-car engineering. It served as Ford’s entry-level light commercial vehicle, positioned below larger pickups such as the Ranger.
Three generations were produced. The original Bantam was based on the third-generation Ford Escort. Its successor, introduced in 1990, used Mazda 323 underpinnings and was also sold in South Africa as the Mazda Rustler. The third generation arrived in 2002 with styling and mechanical links to the Ford Fiesta. Updates during its production life revised the exterior, cabin and available equipment.
Versions ranged from basic working models to better-equipped leisure-oriented derivatives, with trim names including XL, XLT and XLE in later years. Depending on generation and model year, the engine range included small four-cylinder petrol units and selected diesel options, generally paired with a manual transmission.
The Bantam is known for combining a useful cargo area with compact dimensions, relatively simple mechanicals and car-like road manners. It appealed to small businesses, tradespeople and private owners needing more carrying ability than a hatchback without the size of a full-scale pickup.
