About Ford Aerostar
The Ford Aerostar was Ford’s first minivan, sold for the 1986–1997 model years and built in Missouri primarily for the North American market. It sat below the full-size Econoline in the brand’s van range, providing family seating and cargo flexibility in a more manageable body. Unlike the front-wheel-drive minivans that came to dominate the class, the Aerostar used a front-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout.
The model remained in a single generation, although Ford introduced styling, equipment and powertrain updates during its production run. It was available as a passenger wagon and commercial cargo van, with regular- and extended-length bodies. Passenger versions included XL and XLT trims, while the Eddie Bauer edition offered additional equipment for part of the model’s lifespan.
Early Aerostars used four-cylinder or V6 engines, but V6 power soon became standard across the range. A 4.0-litre V6 and electronically controlled all-wheel drive arrived for 1990, giving the van a useful combination of passenger capacity, towing ability and poor-weather traction.
The Aerostar is known for its sloped profile, spacious extended version and more van-like driving layout. Ford introduced the front-wheel-drive Windstar for 1995 but kept the Aerostar in production through 1997 for buyers who preferred rear-wheel drive, available all-wheel drive or cargo-van utility.
