About FIAT X1/9

The FIAT X1/9 is a compact two-seat sports car introduced in 1972 as the successor to the 850 Spider. Designed by Marcello Gandini at Bertone, it combined wedge-shaped styling with a transverse mid-mounted engine, rear-wheel drive and a removable Targa-style roof panel.

Within FIAT’s range, the X1/9 provided a more specialised sports-car layout than the brand’s conventional saloons and front-engined open models. It was developed for international markets, particularly the United States, where much of its production was sold. Its fixed rollover structure also reflected growing safety requirements for open cars.

Early versions used a 1.3-litre four-cylinder engine and four-speed manual gearbox, with several mechanical components derived from the FIAT 128. A major update in late 1978 introduced a 1.5-litre engine, five-speed transmission, revised bumpers and an improved interior. Bertone assumed production and marketing in 1982, continuing the model under its own branding until 1989.

The X1/9 is known for balanced handling, compact dimensions, pop-up headlights and unusual practicality for a mid-engined car. It offered luggage compartments at both ends, while the roof panel could be stored at the front. Rather than relying on high power, it occupied an accessible niche by combining Italian design, responsive handling and everyday usability.
