About FIAT Uno

The FIAT Uno is a small hatchback introduced in Europe in 1983 as a successor to the 127. Designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro, it was offered mainly with three- and five-door bodywork. Its tall, angular shape provided a spacious cabin and accessible luggage area within compact exterior dimensions, helping establish a practical layout for modern city cars.

European versions ranged from economical petrol and diesel models to the performance-oriented Uno Turbo. The Uno was also the first FIAT to use the FIRE engine, a power unit that later became important across the brand’s small-car range. The model was named European Car of the Year for 1984 and became one of FIAT’s defining mass-market vehicles of its period.

Production began in Brazil in 1984, with adaptations for local conditions. The Brazilian range included basic, luxury and sporting variants, while the 1.0-litre Uno Mille became especially significant as an affordable entry-level car. The original design remained in Brazilian production until 2013.

A Brazilian-developed second generation arrived in 2010 with four doors, a rounded-square design and 1.0- or 1.4-litre flex-fuel engines. Versions included Vivace, Attractive and the raised, rugged-looking Way. Later models gained Firefly engines and updated safety and convenience equipment. Brazilian Uno production ended in 2021 with the limited Ciao edition. Across its forms, the Uno is known for efficient packaging, low running costs, simplicity and a strong position in FIAT’s compact-car line-up.
