About FIAT Ritmo
The FIAT Ritmo is a compact family car produced from 1978 to 1988. It replaced the FIAT 128 and occupied the brand’s mainstream small-family segment above the 127 and, later, the Uno. The Ritmo was eventually succeeded by the Tipo. In the United Kingdom, North America and some other export markets, it was sold as the FIAT Strada.
Designed primarily as a practical front-wheel-drive hatchback, the Ritmo was offered with three or five doors. Its spacious cabin, folding rear seat and large tailgate suited everyday and family use. The model became known for its unconventional appearance, including prominent plastic bumpers, circular styling details and round door handles. Production also marked an important step in FIAT’s adoption of automated body assembly through the Robogate system.
The range included petrol and diesel engines, basic economy versions and more highly equipped trims. Sporting models included the 105 TC and the Abarth-developed 125 TC and 130 TC, which gave the Ritmo a place among the notable European performance hatchbacks of the 1980s. A convertible designed and built by Bertone added a distinctive open-top variation. Facelifts brought more conventional front-end styling and interior updates while retaining the model’s practical character.
