About FIAT Palio
The FIAT Palio is a compact hatchback introduced in Brazil in 1996. Developed under Project 178 as FIAT’s first “world car”, it was designed for production and sale across regions with differing road conditions and customer needs. Manufacturing expanded beyond Brazil to countries including Argentina, India, China, Turkey and South Africa.
Positioned in the B-segment, the Palio was conceived as a successor to the Uno and became a central part of FIAT’s affordable small-car range, particularly in Latin America. It was known for practical dimensions, useful interior space, economical engines and a robust chassis suited to demanding roads.
The original Palio was offered with three- and five-door hatchback bodies and a broad selection of petrol, diesel and, in some markets, flex-fuel engines. Equipment levels ranged from basic entry models to better-equipped ELX and HLX versions. Notable variations included the value-focused Palio Fire, the sportier 1.8 R and Sporting models, and later versions with automated Dualogic transmissions.
Several redesigns kept the car competitive, while a substantially new generation arrived in 2011 with more cabin space, updated styling and revised engines. The wider Project 178 family also produced the Palio Weekend estate, Siena saloon and Strada pickup. Across its long market life, the Palio established a strong reputation as a straightforward, versatile and accessible everyday car.
