About FIAT Croma

FIAT Croma is a name used for two distinct large family cars. The original Type 154 was produced from 1985 to 1996 as a five-door liftback positioned near the top of FIAT’s passenger-car range. Designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro’s Italdesign, it formed part of the Type Four programme alongside the Lancia Thema and Saab 9000. Its front-wheel-drive layout, spacious cabin and choice of petrol and diesel engines made it a practical alternative to conventional executive saloons.

The first Croma is especially associated with long-distance comfort and diesel technology. Its range included naturally aspirated and turbocharged engines, while the direct-injection Turbo D i.d. was a notable technical version. Several facelifts updated the styling and equipment, but the basic formula remained a roomy, understated hatchback with saloon-like proportions.

FIAT revived the name in 2005 for the Type 194, built until 2010. This second Croma used a taller five-door body combining estate-car practicality with some MPV-style packaging. Initially described as a Comfort Wagon, it prioritised easy access, a raised seating position, passenger space and luggage flexibility. Petrol engines were available, while 1.9- and 2.4-litre Multijet diesels played a central role. A 2007 facelift introduced revised styling. In both generations, the Croma served as FIAT’s comfort-focused choice for buyers needing more space than its mainstream compact models.
