About FIAT Cinquecento

The FIAT Cinquecento is a compact city car produced from 1991 to 1998 at the Tychy plant in Poland. Its name means “five hundred” in Italian, linking it with FIAT’s tradition of small, accessible cars. Developed as a modern successor to the 126, it introduced a front-engine, front-wheel-drive layout and more practical packaging while retaining a simple, economical character.

Offered only as a three-door hatchback, the Cinquecento occupied the entry-level end of FIAT’s European passenger-car range. Its short body and light weight suited crowded urban roads, while the upright cabin made efficient use of the limited exterior dimensions. Depending on the year and market, petrol engines included 704 cc two-cylinder and 899 or 903 cc four-cylinder units. The 704 cc version was primarily associated with the Polish market.

The best-known variation is the Cinquecento Sporting, introduced with a 1.1-litre FIRE engine, a close-ratio five-speed gearbox and firmer, lower suspension. It added distinctive trim and livelier handling without changing the model’s basic city-car role. Other versions included market-specific equipment grades, the Soleil with a retractable fabric roof, and the limited-production electric Elettra. The Cinquecento is remembered for compact dimensions, straightforward engineering and affordable everyday transport. It was replaced by the closely related FIAT Seicento in 1998.
