About FIAT Barchetta
FIAT Barchetta is a compact two-seat roadster produced from 1995 to 2005. Its name means “little boat” in Italian, a traditional term for a small open sports car. Developed by FIAT’s Centro Stile, it gave the brand a dedicated open-top sports model after a long absence and sat apart from its mainstream hatchbacks and saloons.
Although distinctively styled, the Barchetta used front-wheel drive and engineering derived from the first-generation Punto. Production cars had a 1.8-litre 16-valve petrol engine with variable valve timing, paired with a five-speed manual gearbox. The model was built only in left-hand-drive form, including examples sold in markets where right-hand drive was usual.
Early cars were assembled by specialist coachbuilder Maggiora at Chivasso. Following a production interruption, later examples were assembled at Fiat’s Mirafiori plant. The range remained mechanically focused, with differences mainly in equipment, trim and appearance. Market-specific editions included Lido, Riviera and Naxos, while a 2003 update brought revised front and rear styling.
The Barchetta is known for its compact proportions, rounded Italian design, manually operated fabric roof and accessible performance. Rather than relying on high power or luxury, it offered a light, characterful roadster with everyday mechanical foundations and a clear link to FIAT’s tradition of small open sports cars.
