About FIAT Argenta
The FIAT Argenta was a four-door large family saloon produced from 1981 to 1985. It replaced the FIAT 132 and was effectively a substantial redevelopment of that model, with revised styling, a more modern interior and upgraded equipment. It occupied the upper end of FIAT’s passenger-car range before the arrival of the Croma.
Unlike the front-wheel-drive models that were becoming central to the brand, the Argenta retained a conventional front-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout. It was offered only as a saloon and was aimed at buyers seeking generous cabin space, long-distance comfort and a more formal vehicle than FIAT’s smaller family cars.
Early versions included 1.6-litre petrol, fuel-injected 2.0-litre petrol and 2.5-litre diesel models. A 1983 update introduced revised front styling, chassis changes and FIAT’s contemporary five-bar grille. The later range included 100, 110 and 120 i.e. petrol variants, alongside Diesel and Turbo D versions.
The most distinctive performance derivative was the supercharged 2.0-litre model, sold as the SX in Italy and VX in export markets. Known for its traditional engineering, roomy body and broad engine choice, the Argenta served as a transitional flagship between the long-running 132 and the more modern, front-wheel-drive Croma.
