About FIAT 697
The FIAT 697 was a heavy-duty truck developed by Fiat Veicoli Industriali for demanding haulage and construction work. Introduced in 1970 as the successor to the FIAT 693, it occupied the upper end of the company’s commercial-vehicle range before the arrival of the FIAT 300 series. Italian production continued until 1980, while locally built derivatives remained in service and production longer in markets such as Argentina and Turkey.
Built mainly around a three-axle 6x4 chassis, the 697 was offered for both road transport and difficult site conditions. Its forward-control cab provided a compact overall layout and good use of chassis length. Power came from a large-capacity FIAT six-cylinder diesel engine, designed to deliver the low-speed pulling ability required for heavy loads.
Principal versions included the 697 N rigid truck, the shorter 697 T tractor unit for semi-trailers and the 697 NP construction model. Depending on the chassis and local market, it could be fitted as a tipper, cargo carrier, concrete mixer or heavy-haul tractor. Argentina also produced specialised military derivatives, including 6x6 vehicles.
The 697 is chiefly known for its strong chassis, straightforward mechanical design and suitability for high-load operation. It became particularly established in South American heavy transport, where its durability and adaptability supported a long working life.
