About FIAT 682
The FIAT 682 was a heavy-duty commercial truck introduced in 1952, when revised Italian road regulations changed permitted vehicle capacities. Produced until 1988, it became one of FIAT’s longest-running industrial vehicle designs and a significant part of the brand’s post-war heavy truck range.
The model was offered as a rigid goods vehicle and as a tractor unit for semi-trailers. Standard versions used a forward-control cab and diesel power, usually with a 4x2 layout. Specialist builders also produced three-axle conversions and fitted the chassis with tipper, tanker, fire-service and other working bodies.
Major developments included the N, N2, N3 and N4 rigid trucks, alongside corresponding T-series tractor units. Later versions received larger or more powerful engines, revised cabs and strengthened transmission components. Specifications varied by period and market, particularly for export vehicles designed to carry heavier combinations.
Known for robust construction, mechanical simplicity and adaptability, the 682 served both long-distance transport and demanding site work. It gained an especially strong reputation in African markets, where local assembly and extended production supported its continued use in difficult operating conditions and led to its “King of Africa” nickname.
