About FIAT 673
The FIAT 673 was a medium-duty commercial truck introduced by Fiat Veicoli Industriali in Italy in 1970. It replaced the FIAT 643 and occupied the middle of the company’s truck range, below its heavy long-distance models. Italian production ended in 1973 when the 673 gave way to the newer FIAT 160. Manufacture continued in Argentina from 1974 to 1983, giving the model a longer presence in South America.
Built on a strong ladder-frame chassis, the 673 used a forward-control cab and a 4x2 rear-wheel-drive layout. Power came from a naturally aspirated 7.4-litre OM CP3 inline-six diesel, rated at 145 DIN horsepower. Its practical design suited regional freight, construction work and other medium-haul duties.
The range included the 673N rigid truck, the 673R for trailer operation and the 673T tractor unit for semi-trailers. Different chassis lengths allowed the fitting of cargo bodies and specialised equipment. The model was known chiefly for chassis strength, versatility and a spacious, well-lit cab. Engine overheating could occur during severe overloading or demanding operation, particularly on some Argentine vehicles.
Within FIAT’s commercial line-up, the 673 represented a conventional, adaptable working truck rather than a specialised flagship. Its extended Argentine production reflects its importance as a locally built medium-duty vehicle.
