About FIAT 242
The FIAT 242 was a large light commercial vehicle introduced in 1974 and built by FIAT in Italy until 1987. Developed jointly with Citroën, it shared its basic design with the Citroën C35. It gave FIAT a higher-capacity alternative to the smaller 238 and helped establish a pattern of Italian-French cooperation in commercial vehicles.
Its front-wheel-drive layout and semi-forward-control cab contributed to a low, practical cargo floor and generous interior space. A broad windscreen and large glass area provided good outward visibility. Petrol and diesel engines were offered during the production run, although availability and specifications differed by year and market.
The range supported varied working roles through panel van, pick-up, chassis-cab and minibus versions. The platform was also used for specialist conversions, including ambulances and motorhomes.
The 242 is mainly known as a spacious, adaptable European work van with straightforward mechanical design and a boxy body suited to carrying goods or conversion. It remained in FIAT’s commercial range into the 1980s, bridging the period between the older 238 and 241 models and the newer Ducato generation.
