About FIAT 147
The FIAT 147 is a compact three-door hatchback launched in Brazil in 1976. Closely related to the Italian Fiat 127, it was developed for South American production and became the first FIAT vehicle manufactured in Brazil. Built at the new Betim plant in Minas Gerais, it established the brand in the country’s important small-car segment.
The 147 combined front-wheel drive with a transversely mounted engine, an arrangement that helped provide useful cabin space within a short body. Other notable features for its market and period included radial tyres, a laminated windscreen and a spare wheel stored in the engine compartment. Its compact dimensions, straightforward mechanical design and economical operation made it particularly suited to urban use.
The range evolved through several trims and restylings. The Rallye, introduced in 1978, added a sportier appearance and a 1.3-litre engine. Later Europa and Spazio versions brought substantial exterior and interior updates. Depending on year and market, the model used small-displacement petrol or ethanol engines, notably 1.05- and 1.3-litre units. In 1979, the ethanol-powered 147 became the world’s first series-produced car designed to run entirely on ethanol. The model also formed the basis of a wider family of practical FIAT vehicles and remains closely associated with the brand’s early growth in Brazil.
