About FIAT 131
Introduced in 1974, the FIAT 131 was a rear-wheel-drive family car positioned as the successor to the FIAT 124. Produced until 1984, it became one of the brand’s principal medium-sized models during a period shaped by the oil crisis. Its angular, functional design reflected growing emphasis on fuel economy, safety, cabin space and everyday usability. The Mirafiori name used in many markets referred to FIAT’s major Turin factory, where production began.
The range included two- and four-door saloons as well as a five-door estate, initially called Familiare and later Panorama. Three main series brought styling, equipment and mechanical updates. Depending on year and market, buyers could choose from several petrol and diesel engines, manual or automatic transmissions, and trims ranging from basic Mirafiori models to better-equipped Supermirafiori versions. Sportier derivatives included the Racing or Sport, while the model was sold as the Brava in the United States.
The 131 is known for its practical packaging, straightforward mechanical layout and broad range of body and engine options. Its strongest sporting association is the FIAT 131 Abarth Rally, which won the World Rally Championship for manufacturers in 1977, 1978 and 1980. This competition record gave an otherwise conventional family car a lasting place in FIAT and Abarth history.
