About FIAT 128
The FIAT 128 is a compact family car introduced in 1969 as the successor to the FIAT 1100 R. It represented a major technical shift within FIAT’s range, combining front-wheel drive with a transversely mounted engine and side-mounted gearbox. This layout created a spacious passenger compartment and useful luggage capacity within a body about 3.85 metres long, while helping to reduce weight and fuel use.
Initially offered as a two- or four-door three-box saloon, the range soon expanded to include a practical estate. Sportier derivatives included the 128 Rally and the shorter-wheelbase 128 Sport Coupé, while the later 128 3P adopted a three-door body with a large rear hatch. Engine choices centred on compact four-cylinder petrol units, chiefly 1.1- and 1.3-litre versions, with outputs varying by model and market.
Positioned as an affordable mainstream car, the 128 became an important European volume model for FIAT and won the 1970 European Car of the Year award. It is especially known for efficient packaging, simple styling, low weight and handling that was advanced for its class, supported by independent suspension and front disc brakes. Italian production continued until 1985, while related and licensed versions were built in several other countries. Within FIAT’s lineup, it helped establish the front-wheel-drive formula later used across the brand’s compact cars.
