About FIAT 127
Introduced in 1971 as the successor to the FIAT 850, the FIAT 127 was a small family car that helped define the modern European supermini. Its front-mounted transverse engine and front-wheel drive provided efficient use of space, while independent suspension and front disc brakes were advanced features for an affordable compact model. A three-door hatchback with a folding rear seat joined the original two-door version in 1972. The 127 was named European Car of the Year for 1972.
The range developed through several updates and included Special, CL and Super trims, as well as the more powerful 127 Sport. Five-door models increased everyday practicality, while the Panorama estate offered additional luggage capacity. Petrol engines dominated the range, although diesel versions were also produced. The related Fiorino adapted 127 components for light commercial use. Specifications and body styles varied between countries and production locations.
Known for compact dimensions, a roomy cabin and simple mechanical design, the 127 became one of FIAT’s key mass-market cars of the 1970s. It sat above the brand’s smallest city cars and established a template followed by later FIAT hatchbacks. The Uno replaced it in the main range from 1983, although European production continued until 1987.
