About FIAT 126

The FIAT 126 is a compact two-door city car introduced in 1972 as the successor to the classic FIAT 500. It retained the basic rear-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout and used a small two-cylinder engine. With seating for four in a very short body, it occupied the most affordable and space-efficient end of FIAT’s passenger-car range.

Production began in Italy, but the model became especially important in Poland. Licensed production of the Polski FIAT 126p started in 1973, and Polish factories built most examples. Known locally as the Maluch, meaning “little one”, it became widely used as accessible family transport and a recognised part of Polish motoring culture. Polish production continued until 2000.

Early cars used a 594 cc air-cooled engine, while later versions generally received a 652 cc unit and various equipment and trim updates, including Personal models in some markets. The 126 BIS, introduced in the late 1980s, was the most substantial variation, combining a 704 cc water-cooled engine with a rear hatch for improved luggage access. The model is known for its simple mechanical design, compact dimensions, low weight and basic, practical character rather than performance or refinement.
