About FIAT 125
The FIAT 125 is a four-door, rear-wheel-drive family saloon introduced in 1967. Built in Italy until 1972, it replaced the FIAT 1500 and was later succeeded by the FIAT 132. It occupied an upper-middle position in the range, offering more space, equipment and performance than FIAT’s smaller family models.
Developed using proven FIAT components, the 125 combined a spacious, conventional saloon body with a 1.6-litre twin-cam four-cylinder engine. Four-wheel disc brakes were another notable feature. The model became known for balancing strong performance with practicality, comfort and robust mechanical design.
The original version was joined by the more powerful and better-equipped 125 S. This evolved into the facelifted 125 Special, which offered updated styling and additional transmission and equipment choices. Small numbers of specialist coupés and performance derivatives were also produced.
Versions based on the 125 were manufactured outside Italy. Argentina produced saloon, estate, Sport coupé and Multicarga pickup variants until 1982. The Polski Fiat 125p was a related licensed model built in Poland with simpler, older mechanical components; it remained in production in saloon, estate and pickup forms until 1991. These international derivatives extended the design’s presence well beyond the short Italian production run.
