About Ferrari Mondial
The Ferrari Mondial is a mid-engined V8 2+2 grand tourer produced from 1980 to 1993. It replaced the Bertone-styled 308 GT4 and brought Pininfarina design to Ferrari’s four-seat, mid-engine range. Offered as a coupé and, from 1983, a Cabriolet, it combined sports-car engineering with occasional rear seating, a roomier cabin and greater touring practicality.
Four principal versions were built. The Mondial 8 introduced the model with a transverse 2.9-litre V8. The Mondial Quattrovalvole, commonly called the QV, added four-valve cylinder heads and included the first Cabriolet. The Mondial 3.2 gained a larger 3.2-litre engine along with styling and equipment updates. The final Mondial t used a longitudinal 3.4-litre V8 with a transverse gearbox, a powertrain arrangement related to the contemporary Ferrari 348.
Within Ferrari’s line-up, the Mondial was the more accommodating alternative to the company’s two-seat V8 models rather than a conventional luxury four-seater. Its rear seats are mainly suited to children or occasional use, but the longer wheelbase and added cabin space broadened its everyday and touring appeal. The model is known for its unusual combination of mid-engine balance, gated manual transmission, 2+2 packaging and open-air driving in Cabriolet form. It remains one of Ferrari’s rare mid-engined 2+2 model lines.
