About Ferrari GTO
The Ferrari GTO is a limited-production, two-seat supercar introduced at the Geneva Motor Show in March 1984. Its official name is simply GTO, although it is widely known as the 288 GTO, referring to its 2.8-litre-class, eight-cylinder engine. GTO stands for Gran Turismo Omologato.
Ferrari developed the car to meet Group B competition regulations, which required at least 200 road-going examples. Rule changes ended its intended racing programme before it could compete, but demand led Ferrari to build 272 cars. The GTO was therefore known primarily as an exceptionally focused road model rather than a competition car.
Its mid-mounted 2.9-litre twin-turbocharged V8 produced 400 hp and drove the rear wheels through a five-speed manual transmission. Pininfarina styling evolved familiar Ferrari themes, while composite body materials, a tubular chassis and extensive aerodynamic work helped reduce weight and improve performance.
The GTO had one production generation and no regular trim range. A more extreme GTO Evoluzione prototype supported later development work. Positioned above Ferrari’s series-production sports cars, the GTO established the brand’s limited-edition supercar line. It remains notable for its rarity, direct driving character, restrained electronics and close connection between road-car engineering and motorsport objectives.
