About Ferrari F40

The Ferrari F40 is a two-seat, rear-mid-engined berlinetta introduced in 1987 to mark Ferrari’s 40th anniversary. Developed from the 288 GTO and experimental GTO Evoluzione, it occupied the highest-performance position in the road-car range. It was also the final Ferrari production model presented during Enzo Ferrari’s lifetime.

Built from 1987 to 1992, the F40 existed as a single generation rather than a family of regular trim levels. Road cars differed in some equipment and specifications according to production period and destination market. Competition-focused derivatives included the F40 LM, F40 Competizione and later GT racing developments; the official F40 Competizione used a more powerful version of the same basic engine layout.

The road model combines a twin-turbocharged 2.9-litre V8 with a five-speed manual transmission and rear-wheel drive. Its tubular steel chassis, composite reinforcement and lightweight bodywork reflect a strong focus on performance rather than comfort. Pininfarina styling, a large fixed rear wing, prominent air intakes and a sparse cabin reinforce its racing-influenced character.

Within Ferrari’s limited-series flagship lineage, the F40 followed the 288 GTO and preceded the F50. It is particularly known for its direct, minimally assisted driving experience, low weight, dramatic turbocharged performance and claimed 324 km/h top speed.
