About Ferrari California
The Ferrari California is a front-engined, rear-wheel-drive 2+2 grand tourer with a two-piece retractable hardtop. Introduced in 2008, it revived a historic Ferrari name while establishing a more versatile position in the modern range. Its compact rear seats, usable luggage area and coupé-to-convertible roof made it better suited to touring and regular use than the brand’s more focused mid-engined sports cars.
The California remained one model generation but received several important developments. Early cars used a naturally aspirated 4.3-litre V8 producing 460 hp, paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. The California 30 followed in 2012, with increased power and reduced weight. In 2014, the substantially revised California T introduced a 3.9-litre turbocharged V8 with 560 hp, along with updated styling, interior features and driving technology. A Handling Speciale package later offered a more responsive chassis setup.
Within Ferrari’s lineup, the California was positioned as a comfort-oriented V8 GT rather than a track-focused model. It is known for combining strong performance with open-top driving, a refined cabin and greater everyday practicality than many Ferraris of its period. The Portofino succeeded it in 2017.
